Life of a Voyageur with Lyle Emme
Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at the presentation. It was expected that a majority of
respondents would:
• learn something new about the voyageurs.
• learn what it was like to live the life and do the job of a voyageur.
• be interested in checking out library materials on the fur trade.
• share a positive review of the program with others.
In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the
program.
The compilation of evaluations is attached. All respondents indicated they learned something about the
voyageurs, and all stated they learned what it is like to live the life and do the work of a voyageur. Sixty-seven percent of respondents indicated they were interested in checking out library materials about voyageurs and
the fur trade. Ninety-six percent of respondents stated they would share a positive review of the program.
This librarian observed an excellent turnout for the program. It was especially heartening to see a wide range
of ages, from school-age children to seniors. One of the characteristics of a successful program at New Ulm Library is when audience members stay after the program to talk with the presenter or among themselves, and based on that criterion, this program was a great success. People remained after the formal presentation to
look at the replica displays and talk with the presenter.
