Author Visit: Nancy Carlson
We will collect anecdotal responses to the program. We expect that participants will enjoy access to a talented author/illustrator, will be inspired to read and draw, and learn more about the publishing business.
The outcomes were met. Everyone had only positive things to say about Nancy Carlson and her talks. The teachers were impressed with how Nancy could hold the attention of their students. Other attendees remembered Nancy's visit to St. James in the early '90s, and enjoyed reconnecting with her and her works. Before her visit, the elementary school librarian prepared the students by reading them Nancy's stories and having them do projects such as creating posters to advertise her visit. When Nancy mentioned one of the books the students read such as I Like Me, the students would whip their heads around and look at their teachers as if to say, "Yes, we read that book together and remember." Parents attending the evening program groaned when Nancy recommended that young budding artists and writers save much of their work for future inspiration. Nancy did educate adults on the publishing business saying that she has not yet received any royalties from e-books and that she is thankful she started publishing in the '80s and '90s when publishers wanted authors to take up as much shelf space as possible and they encouraged the publication of series books.
