Project Overview
Lance Hartzell, Professor of Education and Art at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, presented an hour-long interactive program on the Impressionism art movement. Professor Hartzell introduced the program, then he provided a hands-on activity that directed audience members to create a piece of impressionistic art with markers. After guiding audience members through their activity, Professor Hartzell focused on a PowerPoint presentation that introduced the art form and featured some of the masters of the movement. He ended with a Q&A session with the audience.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at the presentation. It was expected that a majority of
respondents would:
• learn something about Impressionism.
• gain a greater appreciation for the Impressionistic style.
• be interested in checking out art books from the library.
• share a positive review of this program with others.

In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Results of the evaluations are attached. This program was extremely well received. All survey respondents indicated they learned something about Impressionism and gained a greater appreciation for the Impressionistic style. The majority of respondents indicated they are interested in checking out library materials about Impressionism and art. All indicated they would share a positive review of the program.

This librarian observed audience members appearing to be engaged in the program. The hands-on activity was especially popular. Audience members asked several questions at the end of the program, and they remained
after the formal presentation to talk among themselves.

Anecdotal responses included: “Great presentation – more of these appreciated.” “Excellent! Liked activity.”
and “I think it was great to offer a presentation like this to NU. I love to learn anything!”
