Down through the Decades with Vintage Aprons, with Yvonne Cory
Attendees will see more than 60 different vintage aprons and learn how styles have evolved over the years, learn how the style and function of aprons have changed in response to our lives, and develop a greater appreciation for the textile arts.
Each attendee saw more than 65 different vintage aprons dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s all the way up to styles popularized in the 1960s and today. The evolving style featured prominently in the presentation. Of those in attendance, 50% had never been to a library program before. Everyone in attendance noted they had a better understanding of how apron styles had changed over the years, including length, style, fabric and color. Yvonne carefully highlighted changes in apron styles based on the Great Depression, various wars and conflicts, women's liberation and other major societal changes. It was even noted that gingham (ala Dorothy) boomed in popularity following the release of the classic film, The Wizard of Oz. Everyone in attendance responded positively that they developed a greater sense of the artistry involved in textile making. Many of the aprons included in the presentation had embroidery and other detailing that illustrated how aprons were examples of unique artistry.
