Project Overview
Both Quade WMA and Manthey WMA are primarily managed for prairie. On each there are wooded components, and will remain as part of the management of woodland wildlife species. Quade WMA is a square block of nearly 160 acres. A majority of the WMA had been seeded to prairie in the past, but faces encroachment from green ash, boxelder and staghorn sumac. These trees are not exotic, yet do spread readily across grassland landscapes without management. A 50+ ac wooded grove persists in the southeast portion of the WMA and a wooded drainageway occurs in the northwest. These woodlands are there for the management of woodland wildlife species; however, require managing the prairie area with more frequent disturbance to set-back encroaching trees. Manthey WMA is bordered to the south by the LeSueur River and along the east by the outlet from Kanne Marsh. Both of these waterways are heavily wooded corridors. For this reason, encroachment from boxelder and cottonwood is a challenge for prairie land management. The encroachment is much worse around the river corridors and scattered trees are present throughout.
