Project Overview
Historically, butternut and elm were an important componant of the forested landscape in Kanabec County. Various pathogens have dramatically reduced their presence. Any remaining trees have been severely stressed. The DNR and the USFS have been working towards resistant or tolerant stock. Butternut and elm seedlings are available that show some level of immunity. The proposed planting project will establish seedlings to enhance and restore forest and wildlife habitat in Kanabec County. The planting sites will be on State - WMA land and SWCD administered land within Kanabec County. Successful trees will be used as a future seed source for forest enhancement and restoration in the east central landscape area of Minnesota.
