Project Overview
The Dakota County Agricultural Society, Inc. easement property was converted from farmland to approximately 193 acres of restored wet prairie and seasonally flooded wetlands in 1999. Located on a main tributary to the Vermillion River, this easement provides critical habitat to area wildlife and functions as a stream buffer, providing a significant water quality benefit to the river. Numerous species of native forbs, wildflowers, and native grasses have been seeded into what has traditionally been row crops. Over 2,000 trees were also planted along the southeast and southwest boundaries of this easement. Walking trails, open to the public, were mowed throughout the restoration area and are maintained by local wildlife organizations. As a result, this easement receives heavy public use and is frequently utilized for educational activities. Unfortunately, invasive tree species have migrated into restored areas and threaten the health and diversity of this easement.
