The rehabilitation or replacement of existing State Trail Bridges, including structural engineering inspections of all trail bridges . Of the more than 300 existing bridges on State Trails, the majority are wood or masonry former railroad structures of which more than 1/3 exceed 100 years old. MNDNR Parks and Trails Division has established a target of completing the inspection of 20 bridges and the repair or replacement of 5 bridges during the FY10/11 biennium.

About the Issue

The Parks and Trails Division's State Trail Bridge efforts are focused on the comprehensive inspection of existing state trail bridges and the rehabilitation or replacement of existing state bridges, to enhance user safety, improve accessibility and repair or replace damaged or deteriorated existing structures.

Complete the rehabilitation or replacement of 5 state trail bridges that require rehabilitation to assure continued user safety and trail continuity

Measurable Outcome(s)

The Parks and Trails Division has completed the engineering inspections of 10 bridges, the rehabilitation of 2 bridges, and the replacement of a third bridge as of 1 December 2010. The completed trail bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects, representing 60% of the FY10-11 Division Program target, were all located on the Heartland State Trail.
